The role of Australian women in the First World War was greatly dependent on their role within the society of the time. On the home front alone, women were dealing with many consequences of the war including raising children and managing family responsibilities on their own, shortages in various resources and the overwhelming grief from the loss of dear ones. Women were also largely involved with military services – serving as nurses or in other duties, and assisting with war efforts – closely connected to the war through male relatives or friends fighting in the conflict.
